Unlike other books building the entire thing around a relationship actually works here. The book basically hangs everything on the relationship between Persephone and Hades so if you don’t like them you probably won’t enjoy it. Sure there are antagonistic characters like Adonis (which I saw coming) and Demeter (over-protective, Mother Gothel style), but that’s it really. It’s pretty much straight romance (which I didn’t realise), there’s no villain per say (which I am not used to), it’s all about Persephone and her progression as a Goddess and the relationship she builds with Hades (which is adorable).

OK yes, the writing is nothing special, the world building is lax, but lets be honest, that isn’t what anyone would be reading this book for. But after a chance encounter with Hades God of the Dead, Persephone finds herself in a contract she can’t get out of and the terms are impossible create life in the Underworld or lose her freedom forever. She has been told by her mother Demeter to stay away from the other Gods all her life and now living in New Athens, she hopes to lead a regular life disguised as a mortal journalist.
